Arab countries agreed on plan for Gaza – should versus Trump’s proposal

On Monday, the future of Gaza was discussed at a Cairo summit. During the meeting, Egypt presented a plan for the reconstruction, a plan that the summit has now supported.

– For the Arab states, this was one of the most important meetings for years, says Samir Abu Eid.

Hamas has also supported the proposal, reports Reuters.

“I welcome and support the initiative,” said UN Secretary -General António Guterres at the summit.

According to a draft that Reuters has taken note of, they expect that “early reconstruction” will take six months and will consist of removing races and maintaining temporary housing. It is with the entire reconstruction taking five years and will cost $ 53 billion.

The residents of Gaza should be able to stay in the area during the reconstruction.

Shall exclude Hamas from future rule

According to the plan, a Palestinian committee will temporarily take over power from Hamas and eventually hand over power to the Palestinian Authority, reports CNN. In this way, Hamas will be excluded from the future board of Gaza.

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas says during the summit that he welcomes Egypt’s plan for reconstruction and urges US President Donald Trump to provide his support.

Abbas also says that you are ready to hold presidential and parliamentary elections next year if the circumstances allow.

Is criticized by Israel

But the proposal is criticized by Israel, who believes that it fails to deal with the changed situation after Hama’s attack on October 7, reports Reuters.

And this is where the shoe squeezes according to Samir Abu Eid. The proposal can be embraced by the outside world but getting Israel on the train is much more difficult.

– It will be difficult to agree, says Samir Abu Eid.

He says that Israel has previously rejected the idea that the Palestinian authority should take over the board and it is difficult to see that that attitude has changed.

Will compete with Trump’s suggestion

Egypt’s plan can be seen as a counter -proposal against what Donald Trump previously presented. A plan rejected by the regional leaders.

– They have agreed to completely reject Trump’s idea that people in Gaza be forced to move, says Samir Abu Eid.

Among other things, Trump suggested that the United States should take control of Gaza and that the area’s two million inhabitants should be placed in neighboring countries such as Egypt and Jordan. He also wants to turn the area into “Middle East Riviera”.
