In addition to the Aquaman films, James Wan is best known as a horror director of works such as Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring. He also brings his great love for the genre into his superhero blockbusters. The first Aquaman part impressed with the oppressive The Trench sequence, which was even intended to become its own film. However, the spin-off was canceled in 2021.

Pretty early in Wan’s DC blockbuster, villain David Kane aka Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), marine biologist Stephen Shin (Randall Park) and a diving team go to the bottom of the ocean, where they find an artifact in the shape of find a black trident that can unleash evil powers. When the team comes across old underwater statues while diving, they take photos of them.
The sound that can be heard also appears in the first 30 seconds of Tobe Hooper’s horror milestone Blood Court in Texas aka The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Here a grave robber digs up various body parts in order to use them to create a bizarre figure, which can be seen right at the beginning of the horror shocker. The one second long noise that the Flashlights in the graves created in Hooper’s work can also be heard in Aquaman 2 when taking flash photography underwater.
