The iOS 16 update brings some nice changes to iOS. appleintroduced Home Screen widgets with iOS 14 and now we’re getting support for Lock Screen widgets and a few other customizations. Another useful addition to iOS 16 is the Lock Screen Live Events and Dynamic Island.

What are Live Events in iOS 16?

According to Apple, “Live Activities is a new feature that helps users stay aware of the Lock Screen in real time, whether it’s a sports game, workout, ridesharing or ordering food. “Wait, does that surprise you even more? Let’s try to explain this in simpler terms.

For example, you order food from Yemeksepeti, put your phone aside and go back to work. Now, whenever you want to check order status, Live Events allows you to do so from the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island itself.

No need to unlock your iPhone to check the progress of your order. Both your time and effort are saved. Apple will also share the Live Events API with developers to help developers implement this feature in their apps.

So, are Live Activities and widgets the same?

Not exactly. Live Events use a different mechanism compared to widgets. Any updates a Live Activity receives are via remote push notifications or via the ActivityKit from the app itself. On the contrary, widgets use a timeline mechanism.

How to open Live Events in iOS 16.1 or later

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Face ID & Passcode.
  3. Enter your password to continue.
  4. Scroll down, under Allow Access, turn on the switch next to Live Events While Locked.

How to use Live Events on iPhone

The functionality of the feature depends on the application and the permissions granted. For example, you will have to manually add your favorite team to the Sports category of Apple News. You will then automatically receive live notifications on the Live Events widget displayed on the Lock Screen.

In some cases, like in the Apollo for Reddit app, you need to tap/toggle the Start Live Event button in the options menu.
