Apple struggles with weight and prescription glasses for Vision Pro

Apple‘s VR/AR headset Vision ProIt is reported to be struggling with significant difficulties in its development. Testers who had hands-on experience with the device expressed concerns about its weight and compatibility with prescription glasses.

To address these issues, Apple is said to be working on the next-generation Vision Pro, which focuses on reducing size and improving efficiency. The aim is to eliminate the need for a large external battery pack, which the current version relies on. Apple had originally planned to equip the Vision Pro with an integrated battery, but the extra weight led to the decision to opt for an external battery source connected via a cable.

Vision ProIn its quest to make the device lighter and more compact, Apple had to make a significant compromise regarding the device’s lenses. There is not enough space inside the headset to accommodate prescription glasses. One potential solution being considered is to customize Vision Pro units with prescription lenses suitable for individual users. However, this approach would make it impractical to share and resell the headset.

Additionally, the wide variety of lens combinations required for different users will pose a significant logistical challenge for Apple and its retail stores. Apple would need to obtain a license to sell prescription lenses, effectively becoming a healthcare provider to facilitate this customization.

In summary, development of the second-generation Vision Pro is still a work in progress, but these challenges provide insight into what to expect from Apple’s AR/VR division in the future.
