With the measure imposing a single charger for all electronic devices from December 28, 2024, Apple is making a radical decision. This is the end of some of its iPhones.
No more confusion and uncertainty thanks to this measure which requires all electronic devices to accommodate a single type of charger: USB-C. From Saturday December 28, 2024, major brands will no longer be able to produce or sell devices that are incompatible with this charging port.
Even if the new law is appreciated for its practical side, its implementation is mainly a matter of environmental awareness. Decided by theEuropean Unionthe application of a universal charger for all electronic devices would avoid no less than 10,000 tonnes of waste each year.
This measure implies profound changes for digital companies, particularly for Apple, which is already ending the marketing of some of its devices.
The end of three big Apple names
Apple, which was partly characterized by its Lightning port, had to comply with European requirements and set aside its signature charger. This development marks a turning point for the American firm, which hastened to remove its cheapest devices from its online store.
Among these, theiPhone 1414 Pro and SE. The three smartphones, although visible on the site, cannot be added to the basket and therefore ordered by Internet users. All that remains are the latest devices, such as iPhone 15 and 16.
This inability to order results from the latest law decreed by the European Union, which prohibits any importation of electronic devices incompatible with USB-C from Saturday December 28, 2024. If the iPhone 15 and 16 are still available on the platform, this is because the company with the bitten apple had already abandoned its Lightning port last year, at the time of production of the iPhone 15.
Where to find the iPhone 14, 14 Pro and SE?
If Apple seems to be putting an end to its products with a Lightning port overnight, it is not impossible to acquire these devices from another era. iPhone 14, 14 Pro and SE imported into Europe before December 28, 2024 can still appear on shelves, in order to sell off the last stocks.
Note that it has been impossible to obtain one in an Apple Store for several days now. Only distributors like FNAC, Darty and Boulanger make the iPhone 14 and SE available, which inevitably risk disappearing from the market over the months.
