In the October 2023 issue of the Power On newsletter, Gurman said Apple plans to release two fourth-generation AirPods models and has updated AirPods Max in late 2024. He confirmed on Sunday that that plan was still in progress.
Apple provides updates to AirPods devices
Gurman expects the entry-level fourth-generation AirPods to feature a new design with better fit, improved sound quality and an updated charging case with a USB-C port. Also expect high-end fourth-generation AirPods with active noise cancellation and a speaker that can play audio for Find My Location tracking in the charging case.
He said Apple plans to discontinue the second-generation and third-generation AirPods after releasing the two fourth-generation models. According to Gurman, the updated AirPods Max will have a USB-C port instead of Lightning for charging and wired audio playback, but there will be no other major changes. He said the over-ear headphones will also be available in new colors. Available color options include Green, Pink, Silver, Sky Blue and Space Gray.
