It’s a matter that has plagued Apple for five years now. Accused of recording its users’ information via Siri, the brand decided to try everything.
It’s an astronomical sum that Apple agreed to pay to put an end to complaints from its buyers. Since the outbreak of a case in 2019 concerning its lack of transparency on its users’ data, the brand with the bitten apple has been the subject of numerous controversies.
A case that has lasted for more than five years
It was in 2019 that the scandal broke out. While COVID-19 had not yet confined the entire world within four walls, many American consumers decided to launch a “class action” against Apple. The latter accuse the brand of having violated the confidentiality of its users and file a class action.
According to the victims, Apple listened to their private conversations using the Siri voice assistant, before selling them to third parties. A reprehensible practice that the class action singles out. This text, which must still be approved by the courts, calls on the American brand to correctly erase all the data sneakily stolen.
Apple declares itself innocent
Without doubt, the legal case launched since 2019 risks making Apple lose credibility. As the brand is built on respect for the privacy of its users, the torment which has continued for more than five years is far from without consequences.
In order to clear customs and clean up the stains that have stained the American firm, Apple claims to have never recorded its users’ data: “Apple has consistently denied and continues to deny any alleged wrongdoing and liability“, we can read in the agreement.
In order to put an end to the lawsuits filed by American citizens, Apple has chosen to pay 95 million dollars. A way to compensate the victims and conclude this long legal battle.
Who will be given the $95 million?
If at present, the $95 million agreement has not yet been accepted by the courts, the money should be given to the millions of victims. All users whose conversations were listened to and resold to third parties are eligible for compensation of a maximum of twenty dollars. Please note that only Americans will benefit from the amount due.
