Apple harvest exceptionally early due to heat: ‘Always thunder in fruit cultivation’

Apple harvest exceptionally early due to heat Always thunder in

Autumn seems to have started early this year: you can already see acorns in many places and the many trees on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug are already starting to take on autumn colours. The high temperatures in combination with low water levels are not ideal for fruit growers. Fruit grower Jacco Merkens (42) from Werkhoven expects a bad year for apples and pears. “Pears in particular cannot withstand this heat. They fall from the trees with bushes.” But the down-to-earth fruit grower immediately adds that there is always trouble in fruit cultivation. Then again too wet, then hail again, then freezing cold again. “And even if there is no disaster, it is a disaster, because then we have far too much.”
