Apple announces new iPad Air with M1 chip and 5G

Two years after its last iteration, the iPad Air returns in a fifth generation which considerably narrows the gap with the benchmark for Apple tablets: the iPad Pro. Indeed, the iPad Air 5 is equipped with the famous M1 chip with a CPU part announced as 60% faster than the previous generation and a GPU twice as fast.

In terms of design, nothing changes, the latest iPad Air retaining its 2020 chassis, quite close to that of the iPad Pro. The rest of the technical sheet is changing greatly, especially on the connectivity side. Indeed, the iPad Air 5 benefits from a faster USB-C port and at the same time becomes compatible with 5G and Wi-Fi 6. For unlocking, it still relies on Touch ID. On the other hand, the front camera evolves. The tablet gains a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor and above all the Center Stage functionality.

What’s left for the iPad Pro?

Finally, in terms of accessories, where the iPad Pro had a definite advantage, the new tablet considerably reduces the gap. It is compatible with both the Magic Keyboard, the Smart Keyboard Folio, but especially with the 2nd generation Apple Pencil, the stylus dear to the iPad Pro.
