The call of the mayors and the commissioner is part of Plan Utrecht. The 26 Utrecht municipalities want to look not only at the quantitative demand for asylum reception, but also at the quality of the asylum reception. For example, the plan wants to ensure that education and care are always arranged in the vicinity of an azc, and there must also be sufficient employment.
In addition, the municipalities also want to solve the asylum issue together, instead of individually. For example, the azc in Leersum recently grew by 100 places, but surrounding municipalities took over a number of status holders that had to house the Utrechtse Heuvelrug from the municipality.
Commissioner Oosters, together with Utrecht mayor Sharon Dijksma, had a meeting with State Secretary Eric van der Burg about Plan Utrecht last week. According to Oosters, the State Secretary responded positively to this.
