    The Swedish Maritime Administration’s Director General Erik Eklund says in an interview with TT that the current budget deficit means that two out of five helicopter bases are closed, that one of six icebreakers will be taken out of operation and that maintenance is reduced on the maritime trails.

    The cut is expected to affect both Sweden’s defense preparedness as well as the sea and air rescue and have major consequences for industry and business.

    Minister of Infrastructure Andreas Carlson (KD) says in a written comment to TT that “The Swedish Maritime Administration’s financial situation is very worrying”, and that the authority’s budget documentation should be carefully analyzed in the Government Offices.

    “In the current security policy situation, it is of utmost importance that the core of the Swedish Maritime Administration’s important services maintains a full level. As the Swedish Maritime Administration is taking measures to deal with the deficit, it is central that these services are not affected too negatively, ”Carlson said in the statement.

    Over 7,000 people have been killed in the violence in eastern Congo since last month.

    “The security situation in eastern Congo has reached alarming levels,” the country’s Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

    Not all bodies have been identified. It is also unclear exactly how many of the dead are civil or soldiers.

    “But a significant amount of all dead are civilians,” she emphasized.

    A few weeks ago, the rebel group M23 and Rwandan soldiers took the city of Goma and have since advanced south. The militia is now controlling large parts of eastern Congo and according to the UN, hundreds of thousands have been displaced from the area since the turn of the year.
