Province of Utrecht – The waiting time for a social rental home in Utrecht is on average eleven years. Waiting times are also increasing outside the city; in Bunschoten and Rhenen, for example, home seekers wait more than six years for a place. With priority arrangements, municipalities try to ensure that people who need a house the most are the first in line. Professor Peter Boelhouwer wonders whether the regulations are overshooting their mark. “If you don’t belong to a special group, you actually no longer have a chance on the housing market,” he says.
