Anyone looking forward to Diablo 4 should definitely watch The Unholy on Netflix

Sometimes they come back, in the special case Mephisto’s daughter, who many now know under the name Lilith from Diablo 4. As things stand, Lilith is the antagonist in this play. Here you can find out why the film The Unholy is worth watching in the run-up to Diablo 4.

What is the movie about? The plot follows Gerry Fenn (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a jaded journalist. He tries to keep his head above water with smaller orders. The whole story is set in a New England town.

Although Fenn arrives there for a different story first, he experiences supposed miracles at the town’s church. He senses his second chance to get his career back on track as miracles multiply in the church.

This has to do with the girl Alice, who, as if by magic, is no longer deaf – and not only that – also starts to speak, although she has never done it before. She claims the Holy Virgin Mary is speaking through her. Everyone should learn about the miracles of the Holy Virgin, which soon makes the town a place of pilgrimage for believers.

Meanwhile, Fenn befriends the girl and doubts himself and his actions. In the end, however, the thought arises that the voice that the girl hears might not be that of the Holy Virgin at all.

A religious war between good and evil begins and even calls the church into action. After all, it’s about Fenn’s own peace of mind and vying for the souls of the innocent between heaven and hell.

Lilith, the infernal counterpart of the Holy Virgin?

What does this have to do with Lilith? The film is truly not just about a question of faith, but about evil personified. However, the question arises as to whether, despite all the influence from “below”, the miracles should not be recognized as such or even protected by their followers.

So Alice is in conflict with the miracles she has experienced and her trust in Fenn – parallel to the people in Sancturio who are in the middle of the conflict between Lilith and the angel Inarius. Both parties form the opposite pole to each other and in this way keep their jointly created world Sancturio in balance.

But after escaping her banishment, Lilith wanders about recruiting souls to her cause. At the very beginning of the game she appears as an admittedly brutal savior in a chapel.

The question remains whether and to what extent Lilith’s machinations are actually so much worse than Inarius’ intentions in an otherwise so gloomy world like Sancturio. The world doesn’t seem to have been much better without Lilith.

What is the background to the film? The film is based on a novel called Shrine by James Herbert. Herbert himself died in 2013, but until then was considered Britain’s counterpart to Stephen King. His books have sold over 53 million copies (via deadline.com).

The film is about a horror film with supernatural occurrences. Directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos as his debut work on the big screen. It was produced by Sam Raimi under his own Ghost House Pictures brand. The film is currently available to stream on Netflix. The main cast includes well-known film and television greats such as Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Supernatural, The Walking Dead), Cricket Brown (WeCrashed) and William Sadler (The Condemned, Die Hard 2).

Although effects are skimped on at the beginning, the visual experience picks up speed as the story progresses. With a budget of “only” 10 million dollars (via the-numbers.com) it does not paint any works of art on the screen, but convinces with solid acting.

The film is not a blockbuster, but despite well-known actors like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, it maxed out its budget in terms of sets and cast. And that’s refreshing – sometimes, for example, to look at scenes in real surroundings, without a green screen.

Meanwhile, reviews are divided. According to IMDb, the film has a score of 5.1 out of 10 from 24,977 reviews (via IMDb). Nevertheless, this film is recommended, especially with regard to the imminent release of Diablo 4. The portrayal of the devil as the supposed savior of the community affects Lilith’s role in Diablo 4.

So it’s perhaps no wonder that the film grossed over $31 million (on a budget of $10 million, mind you), despite the mixed reviews. This film can currently be streamed on Netflix or purchased through other media.

Souls that were thought lost can also experience salvation

In some eyes, the film is not a masterpiece. For the intended purpose here, however, it is anyway. Fan favorite Morgan practices melancholy here and ends up fighting with his own demons. Sometimes that can end well, but it can also end badly, as Diablo Parts 1 and 2 have shown.

The depiction and transformation of an anti-hero in an otherwise corrupt world fuels my enthusiasm for this film. It’s an unassuming, even arrogant character who initially seems completely unsympathetic. I and certainly many others can identify well with an average person like Fenn in the film. So many have certainly strayed from the right path, but the question remains whether it then still seems right.

I also appreciate the principle of the “wolf in sheep’s clothing”. It shows itself from its supposedly beautiful side, but can also become quite uncomfortable when the going gets tough. If you want to find out what a porcelain doll has to do with Pandora’s box, then you shouldn’t miss this gem.
