Anti-fossil fuel protest in Australia: 170 detained

Police in Australia’s New South Wales state detained demonstrators who entered the canal with boats and canoes during the anti-fossil fuel protest held at the coal shipping port.

Police warned that it may be illegal to enter the channel used by ships. Following the warning, many people entered the canal with boats. The police announced that they detained 170 people on the grounds that they ‘ignored the instructions and prevented the operation of the facility’. It was stated that 14 of those detained were children.

Port authorities announced that they decided to stop ship movements for a few hours due to security concerns.
