Another thousand people arrested after the start of Turkish demonstrations

In the major demonstrations, for more than ten years, Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has been opposed.

EU and Germany worried

On Monday, the EU urged Turkey as a candidate for EU membership and a member of the Council of Europe to cherish democratic values.

-We want Turkey to remain anchored to Europe, but it requires commitment to democratic norms and practices, the EU Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier said when talking to journalists.

Germany also expressed concerns about the direction of the issues in Turkey.

– It is impossible to accept the arrest and separation of the mayor of Istanbul. This has to be resolved quickly and transparently, the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spokesman comments at a news conference.
