Following the state of Colorado in the USA, the state of Maine also decided to remove former President Donald Trump from the ballot in next year’s primaries. Officials of the state of Maine, the second state where the United States was barred from elections, also cited Trump’s role in the Congress raid in 2021 as the reason for the decision. In her 34-page decision, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows stated that it was inappropriate for Trump to take part in the election due to his actions that led to the Congress raid, and added, “The US Constitution does not ignore an attack on the foundations of our government.”

“WE WILL OBJECT”

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung accused Bellows of interfering in the election, calling him “an extremely partisan Democrat who supports Biden.” Cheung said they would quickly file a legal appeal with the high court to prevent the “draconian decision” from coming into force. The decision will not come into force until Trump and his team’s application to the court is finalized.

COURT’S DECISION

On December 19, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump be removed from the ballot in the state in next year’s elections, in accordance with the 3rd paragraph of Article 14 of the constitution, due to his role in the Congress raid in 2021. The decision stated that since Trump was banned from the election, it would not be appropriate for him to be listed as a candidate in the primaries. While it was stated that the decision would not come into force until January 4, Trump stated that he would appeal to the US Supreme Court by objecting to the decision.

On Wednesday, the Michigan Supreme Court rejected Trump’s application to ban him from the Republican Party primaries in the state on February 27.

CONGRESS RAID

In the USA, far-right groups and Donald Trump supporters raided the Congress building on January 6, 2021, during the session where the victory of Joe Biden, who won the presidential election in November 2020, would be certified. During the violence that lasted for hours, 5 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured.
