According to CBC News, the airport was temporarily closed on Saturday night due to a malfunction on an Air Canada plane landing at Halifax Airport, which caused a skid and a fire on the runway. While the passengers narrowly escaped, the damage to the plane was extensive.
THERE WAS A PROBLEM DURING LANDING
St. Air Canada Flight 2259 from St. John’s encountered major trouble upon landing around 9:30 p.m. One of the passengers, Nikki Valentine, stated that one of the plane’s tires was not deployed properly. As the plane leaned to the left at an angle of approximately 20 degrees, a loud crash was heard as its wing began to slide on the pavement.

As the plane skidded down the runway, passengers said they began to see fire on the left side of the plane and smoke billowing from the windows. The pilots tried to stop the plane by applying the brakes, but the plane moved forward a certain distance. The fire was brought under control in a short time.

After the incident, the passengers on the plane were evacuated. While airport officials did not give information about how many people were on the plane, they announced that the passengers were taken to the hangar to be checked by medical officials. Valentine, one of the passengers, stated that the plane’s capacity was approximately 80 passengers and most seats on the plane were occupied.
