Another master director secretly completely changed Killers of the Flower

Martin Scorsese’s 206-minute epic Killers of the Flower Moon has had a checkered production history. While the overly long film could only be realized thanks to Apple financing for its own streaming service Apple TV+, the script was significantly changed during production.

Now a wild Killers of the Flower Moon rumor has surfaced online that… other master director besides Scorsese is associated with the film. But this has not been officially confirmed.

Master director is said to have rewrote large parts of the Killers of the Flower Moon script

On his blog World of Reel, Jordan Ruimy writes, citing two anonymous sources, that director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) is said to have rewrote a large part of the Killers of the Flower Moon script. However, the information from World of Reel should be viewed with great caution. Ruimy has also often been wrong with his scoops in the past.

What adds weight to the Killers of the Flower Moon case is that respected film critic Charles Bramesco, who writes for the British newspaper The Guardian, among others, also points out the Anderson involvement:

Actually, the script for Killers of the Flower Moon was written by screenwriter Eric Roth. Since there was confusion about Roth’s omission in the 2024 Oscar nominations, Bramesco shared his unconfirmed information about the nominations previously secret Paul Thomas Anderson involvement on the Scorsese film.

As is already known, the story of Killers of the Flower Moon initially focused much more on the role of FBI agent Tom White, which Leonardo DiCaprio was initially supposed to play. When developing his film, Scorsese realized that he felt like this focusing too much on a story about white men would, and changed the script again significantly. In the end, DiCaprio took over the role of Ernest Burkhart, while Jesse Plemons played a much smaller part as Tom White.

Paul Thomas Anderson is said to have made the script changes as a favor to Scorsese. Both have a friendly relationship privately. Scorsese was also a major inspiration for Anderson’s own work, most notably his masterpiece Boogie Nights. Production is said to have just begun on the director’s new project, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, among others.
