Another indictment against Trump – but does it affect the campaign?

Another indictment has been brought against Donald Trump. This time it’s about his statements and actions after the 2020 election – which he felt was not right.
– It is of course very serious, says TV4 Nyhetern’s foreign affairs commentator Bosse Lindwall.

The indictment charges Trump with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, attempting to obstruct an official proceeding and conspiracy against rights.

Each of Tuesday’s new charges could carry 5-20 years in prison.

What makes this charge more serious than the previous ones?

– Because this time it is about suspicions that Trump may have tried to influence a presidential election, to ensure that the rightful successor was not allowed to take office. In addition, he is said to have fueled the storming of the Capitol in 2021, so it is of course very serious, says TV4 Nyhetern’s foreign commentator Bosse Lindwall.

How might it affect the presidential campaign?

– His voters are influenced by the lies they have been told so many times. They probably still believe that Trump is right in what he says. Trump will have to slalom between pulpits and courtrooms during the election campaign and who knows, maybe it will erode the support of even some of the most devoted supporters.

What will happen next?

– On Thursday, Trump will meet with Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is considered one of the toughest judges in Washington. She has convicted several of those who were put on trial after the storming of the Capitol. He will meet her, then they will decide when the trial will start. There is a high risk that it will be postponed for quite some time because Trump’s lawyers are said to say that they need much more time to prepare.
