Another COVID casualty one hospital outbreak ends

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed the life of another Sarnia-Lambton resident.

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed the life of another Sarnia-Lambton resident.

A person from the region in their 60s is the 102nd COVID-related death since March 2020. The latest fatality took place in a London hospital, a Lambton public health spokesperson said Monday.

A total of 84 patients, including some people who lived elsewhere, have succumbed to the disease in Sarnia’s hospital.

Meanwhile, one of the two outbreaks at the facility has been declared over. The outbreak, declared Jan. 14 in the surgical “B” unit at the Norman Street hospital, is now over, Bluewater Health said Monday in a statement.

“Diligent infection prevention and control measures were key in helping control this outbreak. Bluewater Health is grateful for the support of all staff and professional staff, patients and family, and the community during this time,” the organization said.

The hospital still had another active outbreak declared Jan. 7 inside the in-patient rehabilitation unit.

“Bluewater Heath and Lambton public health continue to monitor the outbreak,” the statement said.

The two-site hospital organization also reported it was treating 55 COVID-positive patients, with eight in intensive care. Seventeen were partially vaccinated or unvaccinated.

The vaccination status of the deceased at home or in hospital have not been made available due to privacy concerns, officials have said.

The health unit was also overseeing 18 other outbreaks. They included long-term care and retirement homes, congregate settings and businesses. Two new ones were declared over the weekend at Afton Park Place long-term care home in Sarnia and Lambton County Developmental Services congregate living setting in Corunna.

Another 250 local COVID-19 cases were confirmed over the weekend by the health unit, although officials have repeatedly cautioned the actual number of cases is likely four to six times higher due to the high transmissibility of the Omicron variant and reduced testing.

Of the 8,452 reported to date, 563 were active and 7,787 were resolved. The most recent seven-day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 people in Lambton was 388.8. Ontario’s was 271.8.

As of Monday, 254,684 vaccine doses had been given to residents via the health unit, doctors’ offices, family health teams, and pharmacies. Seventy-seven per cent of the five-plus population was fully immunized and 42 per cent had three doses.
