Venezuela announces that a fourth American citizen has been arrested, accused of plotting the assassination of President Nicolás Maduro.
Previously, three American citizens, two Spaniards and a Czech were arrested for having gone to Venezuela to assassinate the president, according to Interior Minister Diasdado Cabello.
The minister claims on state-run television that the American intelligence service CIA is behind the assassination attempt.
The US and Spain confirm the arrests but deny knowledge of the alleged coup plots.
The EU, the US, the UN and several of Venezuela’s neighboring countries have questioned Maduro’s claim of victory in this summer’s presidential election due to the fact that election data has not been reported in its entirety.
