In the written statement made by the organization, it was noted that more than 10 million people worldwide were diagnosed with tuberculosis in 2021, and this rate increased by 4.5 percent compared to 2020.
In the statement, it was emphasized that 1.6 million people died from tuberculosis last year and over 450 thousand people were diagnosed with drug-resistant tuberculosis.
It was informed that the number of tuberculosis cases decreased continuously until 2020, but started to increase from 2021.
It was stated that the worldwide impact of Kovid-19 in 2020, affecting tuberculosis cases, and the global health system’s full weight in the fight against Kovid-19 prevented the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis cases.
Head of the Tuberculosis Union, whose opinion is included in the statement, Dr. Mel Spigelman noted that although progress has been made in the field of preventive treatment, the world still lags behind in its goals of combating tuberculosis.
Spigelman evaluated that with the emergence of the Kovid-19 epidemic, the achievements of decades in the fight against tuberculosis were wasted. (AA)
