Djurgården came to the meeting with Björklöven with a heavy result-wise trend and also had the worst possible start to the match in Winpos Arena. This when Malte Sjögren was able to score 1-0 behind an overplayed Hugo Hävelid in the away goal.
But the visitors immediately picked themselves up and would turn the tables – in the space of 37 seconds.
First Wiktor Nilsson equalized and shortly afterwards Axel Andersson also gave his Djurgården the lead with 2-1 after a fabulous performance from Linus Klasen.
Decisive jerk
The fact that Björklöven equalized to make it 2-2 didn’t matter much either. Djurgården was able to respond by first scoring the 3-2 goal at the end of the first period, before Daniel Brodin sent in 4-2 at the beginning of the second.
Björklöven’s defense then continued to tremble and before the second period was over, Wiktor Nilsson was left stranded at the far end before he could score his second and Djurgården’s fifth goal of the match.
Before the third period, Björklöven was thus faced with a huge task, but they gave it a proper try in front of the home crowd.
First, Nick Skilkey reduced in the power play after Djurgården was deemed to have too many players on the ice at the same time – a dismissal that was debated.
Djurgården’s Linus Klasen was then awarded a match penalty after a slashing at Björklöven’s Myles Powell – and then the guests were rocking ahead of the final twelve minutes.
There was even more trepidation on the bar when Björklöven got another reduction with a couple of minutes left in the match.
Irritation in Djurgården
But the home team didn’t get any closer than that and instead Djurgården’s Daniel Brodin was able to determine the final score 6-4 in an empty net. But even though it was a victory, Djurgård’s coach Michael Holmqvist was not irritated by the situation that led to Björklöven’s 3-5 reduction in Djurgård’s box play.
– We have full control of it when we get that expulsion, I lose it of course, but shortly afterwards we get a fifth. It became a bit chaotic, unnecessary, it felt like we had full control, says Holmqvist, while he gets to see pictures of the situation.
– It’s a bad decision and I think it’s rudely unnecessary to take a chance on such a situation in a match like this. There are important points on the table for both teams and I think he’s taking a chance – he doesn’t. Everyone can make mistakes and now I’m glad we sorted it out.
