Announces ceasefire to facilitate rescue work in Myanmar

Myanmar’s shadow government, which coordinates the popular fight against the ruling military, announces a unilateral partial ceasefire in an attempt to facilitate the relief efforts. The two -week ceasefire is reported to take effect on Sunday and include offensive military operations in earthquake areas, the AP writes.

The shadow government, alongside the junta, consists of elected officials and other representatives who act from exile. The group is considered by many to be the country’s legitimate government, but under the military’s rule they lack real power.

The junta has not yet commented on the message.
