Annika Sörenstam’s powerful tribute to Ludvig Åberg – says exactly what everyone wants to hear: “I can say that…”

Ludvig Åberg has charmed an entire golf world.
Now Annika Sörenstam says exactly what everyone is thinking about the Swedish superstar.
– I don’t see any weaknesses, says the icon to SVT.

It has not happened since Henrik Stenson’s glory days that a Swede can challenge for major titles. But Ludvig Åberg has been a sensation since he turned pro this summer, and his development is almost unparalleled in history. Already last autumn, he was – without having played a single major competition – selected for Europe’s Ryder Cup team, where he also made a big impression.

Annika Sörenstam’s great tribute

Last week it was finally time for the debut in a major context, golf’s biggest and most difficult stage. Augusta National is perhaps the world’s most fabled golf course, and the Masters the most prized competition there is, but Åberg never even looked nervous. Åberg looked to enjoy every stroke, playing his way to a solitary second place in the competition, only beaten by superior world number one Scottie Scheffler.

Ludvig Åberg is now seventh in the world rankings, and has already won on both the European and PGA tours. Annika Sörenstam, one of the best golfers of all time, is impressed.

– I was impressed before The Masters. He didn’t get enough attention. When he received the Ben Hogan Award twice (the prize for the best college golfer in the USA), I understood that he was “the real deal”, she tells SVT.

“Don’t bet against it”

Annika Sörenstam believes that she sees no weaknesses at all in Ludvig Åberg’s game, and that the only thing that really speaks against him is how short his professional career has been.

– You can say that he is young and lacks experience, but that is something that comes with time. So I see that rather as a strength, that he can only get better, she says.

Scottie Scheffler was the only one who played better than Åberg during the Masters. The 27-year-old American has won three of his last four competitions, and is clearly number one in the world. But Annika Sörenstam now believes that Åberg can become world number one.

– I wouldn’t bet against it. I can say that in the top ten we will probably get used to seeing him, she says.
