The alleged love-hate relationship between Northug and Emil Jönsson Haag was mostly a game for the media, which actually helped both riders.

– I think it’s about his approach and that it’s what made him the star he is. He also increased interest in cross-country skiing as a sport, so you should probably be a little grateful to him that he chose to do what he did. It was very good for our sport, she says.
– He’s probably a little more low-key these days. I think some people are in a way private and then you are a different person officially while some are the same all the time. Then I’ve never had a private meal with him directly, it’s more how I perceived him when we were at competitions together in my younger years.
