Anime for ages 16 and up – These 5 series are adult and not for small children

There are a lot of really good anime, and many of them are only released for ages 16 and up. We’ll show you a selection of them.

In the vast space of anime there are endless variations. Whether it’s a cute children’s series, entertaining comedy or exciting fights to get excited about.

But there are also adult anime series with serious themes, without them being prone to excessive violence and cruelty. These series are often given a rating of “16 years and older” by the FSK – and we would like to introduce you to a few of the best anime from this group here.

Record of Lodoss War

Alternative names: Lodoss-tou Senki
Genre: Action, adventure, fantasy
Episodes: 13
Stream available on: No streaming provider known, currently only available for purchase.

After a thousand years of war between the gods, peace is finally within reach for the young kingdom of Lodoss. But an ancient witch has been awakened and threatens to plunge the kingdom into chaos again through political scheming. The adventure group around the brave Parn and the elf Deedlit face this threat and try to save Lodoss from another downfall – but this will not be possible without sacrifices and all sorts of problems.

Why is Record of Lodoss War 16+? As befits the genre, the heroes’ fantasy journey is characterized by some fights, bitter losses and some somewhat more brutal scenes. Record of Lodoss War also touches on darker themes, such as sexual violence, without explicitly showing them. However, since the series is also one of the older ones, these depictions are not particularly graphic, without that really harming the tension.

Apart from that, Record of Lodoss War is a classic that all fans of “The Lord of the Rings” or “Baldur’s Gate 3” should definitely have seen – after all, the manga template is based on a pen & paper game.

Attack on Titan

Alternative names: Shingeki no Kyojin
Genre: Action, drama
Episodes: 90 (+ films)
Stream available on: Crunchyroll

Humanity is on the brink of destruction. Large monsters called Titans roam the forests and eat people alive. Only behind the walls of a final, small empire is it safe – at least until the Titans tear down this wall. The young Eren Jaeger has to experience how his previously sheltered life comes to an abrupt end and his mother is devoured.

He then joins the “Reconnaissance Squad” to defend himself against the Titans and explore more of the world. Over the course of several years, more and more secrets of the Titans are revealed, questioning everything he seemed to believe until then…

Why is Attack on Titan 16+? The world of Attack on Titan is merciless and this is evident in the first episode, where people are devoured by the Titans. Bodies are often broken down into several parts and the blood spurts out in such quantities that you sometimes wonder where it is supposed to be located in the body. There are also some harsher themes, especially in the later seasons – torture, racism, abuse – which gives the series a clear, adult feel.
