Deer bray, hyenas sneer, giraffes moo, hummingbirds chirp… We know how to name animal voices, but do we know how to hear them? From the mythical song of the whales, through the familiar cricket to the song of the nightingale, a small non-exhaustive inventory of our ways of listening to the wild world.
“The Interpretations” is the third episode of the “Animal Voice” series, designed to echo the exhibition MUSICANIMAL, THE GREAT SOUND BESTIARY, presented at the Philharmonie de Paris until January 23, 2023. Within the exhibition, hundreds of sound, visual and plastic works show the influence of animal voices in the history of art and music . The catalog of the exhibition retraces the themes of the tour in the form of a sound primer and gives the floor to art historians, scientists, artists… this chronicle is inspired by their contributions.
Special thanks to Olivier Adam, bio-acoustician specializing in cetaceans, professor at Sorbonne University; Federica Tamarozzi, ethnologist, head of the Europe department at the Museum of Ethnography in Geneva and the composer Christophe Rosenberg.
