Andersson and Kristersson in debate about cooperation in the EU

On Sunday evening, S-leader Magdalena Andersson and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) met in a debate in SVT’s Agenda.
The discussion concerned the upcoming EU elections and Andersson was critical of the fact that the Moderates’ party group EPP may come closer to the far right instead of cooperating with the social democratic party group.
– The question is rather why EPP wants to destroy a winning concept?, says Andersson.

In one week, the EU elections will be held and opinion polls indicate that the far-right parties in Europe will move forward. During the debate between Magdalena Andersson and Ulf Kristersson, the future cooperation between the various party groups in the parliament was debated.

Andersson: “Why destroy a winning concept?”

The national conservative group ECR, to which the Sweden Democrats belong among others, is increasing according to the surveys and questions have been raised about a collaboration between EPP and ECR.

– If you want to get something done, you must be able to negotiate with parties and countries that think the same way as you, otherwise nothing will get done. There it is quite reminiscent of Sweden, if you want to get something done you have to find common denominators, says Ulf Kristersson.

Andersson is critical of such collaboration. She describes the last five years of cooperation between the EPP and the Social Democratic party group as “very successful”. Magdalena Andersson highlights measures during the Corona pandemic, the support to Ukraine and the development of the climate pact as examples from the last mandate period.

– The question is rather why the EPP wants to destroy a winning concept?

Kristersson: Do not want to see a European December agreement

Ulf Kristersson believes that the upcoming parliament may be complicated, but that Ukraine, the European rule of law, reduced immigration and the climate should be in focus. At the same time, he believes that it is not so dramatic to cooperate between the different party groups.

– I am against any idea of a European December agreement, where it would be said that we do not intend to talk to these countries or party groups, says Kristersson.

Magdalena Andersson replied that she is against a European Tidö agreement.

– We have seen in Sweden what happens when you become dependent on these types of parties, says Andersson.
