Ancient gold jewelry illegally taken out of Ukraine has been confiscated by Spanish police. Five people who have tried to sell the jewelry in Spain have been arrested in recent weeks, the police announced.
Those arrested are two Ukrainians – one of them a priest in the Orthodox Church – and three Spaniards.
The jewelry is estimated to be worth 60 million euros, approximately 700 million Swedish kronor, and is dated to between 800 and 400 years before Christ. According to the police, they are part of Ukraine’s national heritage.
The jewelry disappeared after being exhibited in a museum in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, between 2009 and 2013.
A richly decorated gold belt was seized in 2021 and the rest, earrings and necklaces, have been seized in recent weeks.
Authorities in Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, North Macedonia and Ukraine have helped with the investigation, the Spanish police said.
