Located on the shore of Albion in the west of Mauritius, an isolated site has been the subject of an intense archaeological excavation for 10 days. The work, carried out by the National Heritage Fund, aims to find pirate treasure. Excavations began at this very location. On the second day, two first ancient coins were discovered, causing great excitement. “ It’s a treasure! », enthused Kenyan archaeologist George Abungu, mandated by the Mauritian authorities to direct the excavations. Christopher Assirvaden, among the discoverers, made his first discoveries. “ At the entrance, we removed some soil and found two beautiful silver coins that I myself discovered during the sieving process. »
Seven ancient coins, but no treasure yet
A total of seven ancient coins were found. Silver and bronze coins of about 2 and a half centimeters, not well rounded or well struck, with barely visible inscriptions. As for the treasure attributed to La Buse, the legendary 18th century pirate, it still remains mysterious after 10 days of excavations.
Despite its past as a pirate and privateer hideout and occasional excavations, Mauritius has never discovered any major pirate treasure.
