Ånässkolan is the first school in Gothenburg to get a car-free zone

On Thursday, the first car-free zone was inaugurated at a Gothenburg school.

The zone is part of the red-green government’s pilot project to make it safer for children to cycle to school, as fewer and fewer children walk and cycle to school.

Ånässkolan first out

Just in time for the first day of school on Thursday, Ånässkolan became the first to have a car-free street in front of the school. There have long been problems with a lot of traffic and speeding in the morning.

Aren’t traffic-safe roads something that should be in all schools?

– You can really think so. Some have, of course. We want to look at the schools where it has not turned out that way for various reasons and change and redo, says Karin Pleijel (MP), municipal councilor with responsibility for urban environment and traffic issues.

The project also includes Tångenskolan in Tuve. The price tag for the assignment lands at a total of SEK 700,000.

The guardians positive

Several guardians were positive about the initiative.

– I think it is good that they have created a safer environment for the school children and that they reward walking and bicycle traffic instead, says a guardian Klara Johed.
