Analysis: Therefore, Sweden’s NATO membership is a domestic political debate in Hungary

On Monday, Hungary’s parliament held an extraordinary meeting that the opposition pushed through to vote on Sweden’s NATO membership. However, as the ruling party Fidesz had previously promised, some of their members did not show up for the meeting – making a vote impossible.

That the opposition is pushing for Swedish membership also has to do with how Hungary is considered to deviate from other Western countries.

– The NATO question has become one of the most important internal political issues.
