Analysis: The tension is growing in the Swedish elections – the Swedish Democrats are now bigger than the coalition

Analysis The tension is growing in the Swedish elections

There are only three weeks until the Swedish elections. The tension is growing every day, writes our Nordic correspondent Pirjo Auvinen.

STOCKHOLM Sweden’s politics is behind us for a four-year period, which has been like a tar run in terms of managing things. The points of the right and the left have been so equal in the Parliament that the support of the minority government led by the Democrats may have depended on one member of parliament.

And the situation will not necessarily be resolved in the September 11th elections either. of the Swedish public broadcasting company SVT from last week’s support survey (you will switch to another service) it turned out that the situation between the two conditions for a change of government is so equal that only 15,000 votes are enough to decide the winner. It’s really little.

Until now, the elections have been held as a battle between two prime ministerial candidates. The leading figure of the left bloc is the current Dem prime minister Magdalena Andersson. In addition to the Democrats, his government camp now includes the Left Party, the Greens and the Center Party.

Andersson’s challenger has been considered to be the leader of the moderate coalition party Ulf Kristersson. “On my side” as Kristersson calls his government alternative, in addition to the coalition, are the Christian Democrats, the Swedish Democrats and the Liberal Party.

But the pattern changed in the morning. Even last week, the support of the coalition and the Sweden Democrats was almost the same, but this morning the Sweden Democrats was clearly the largest party in the right-wing camp. The difference with the coalition was already so clear that, according to Novus, it no longer fits into the margin of error.

The situation is embarrassing for party leader Kristersson. It is difficult to appear as a contender if your support does not make your side the number one on the field.

Matters can still be asked to solve, but right now it is hard to imagine what new opening might change the situation substantially.

Gang violence (you move to another service) has received the most first places when asked about the most important election theme for voters. The shooting incident at the weekend in the Malmö shopping center certainly did not reduce the weight. The shooter is a 15-year-old, a gang leader known to the police who was killed, and a woman who was seriously injured was a completely outsider who was shopping.

The parties seem to be competing now about how and how much the penalties are tightened.
