an update that crashes PCs

uninstall buggy update

If your PC is running Windows 11, check for the latest Microsoft updates and uninstall KB5012643 and KB5013943, two buggy versions that cause several issues, even causing blue screens.

Microsoft is definitely having bad luck at the moment. The publisher has indeed published two updates for Windows 11 in quick succession which generate more problems than they correct. Stamped KB5012643 and dated April 25, 2022 (see our practical sheet on KBs and Windows builds), the first caused several problems, in particular a delicate installation, difficulties in entering safe mode and, above all, crashes of various applications. As the publisher explained on his page Windows 11 Known Issues and Notifications, the main problem came from a bug located in the .NET framework, a module used by Windows components and by many software. However, if the other defects of this version have been resolved, this bug has not yet been corrected but simply “attenuated”, to use the pretty expression of the publisher.

The second update, called KB5013943, was released on May 10. And it was supposed to finally fix all the bugs in KB5012643. But Microsoft developers, no doubt pressed for time, obviously forgot to tighten a few bolts before deploying it. Because the patch does even more harm, by causing the famous blue screens (the BSODs, see our practical sheet) and by forcing the crashed PC to restart. This is of the worst effect, especially since Windows 11 is struggling to convince, six months after its official release. Not really the kind of thing that motivates to abandon Windows 10, even if the update remains free…

In fact, the only solution recommended by Microsoft is to purely and simply uninstall these problematic updates, until a permanent solution is found.
