An unprecedented arms race is underway in the third tier

Birmingham, who fell out of the championship series after 13 seasons in the spring, is looking to rise again with big money.

Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds and a fellow actor by Rob McElhenney owned by Wrexham seems to be continuing its meteoric rise in the English football fields.

The team moved up to the Second League at the end of the 2022–2023 season, and from the Second League immediately to the First League for this season.

Now the Welsh club is at the top of the First League after five matches. The best two go directly to the Championship.

On Monday night, Wrexham face a club whose financial stakes knock Reynolds and McElhenney off the board.

Birmingham, who fell out of the championship series after 13 seasons in the spring, is looking to rise again with big money. It spent the summer on the transfer market money 35.5 million euros.

The most expensive acquisition was the center forward, who was recruited from Premier League club Fulham for a record 17.8 million euros Jay Stansfield. Previous First League transfer record was 3.4 million.

The First League has looser financial rules than the Premier League and the Champions League, which Birmingham seeks to exploit.

The amount paid for Stansfield is more than what the Wrexham owners are estimated to have invested in the club during their just under four years of ownership. This summer, Wrexham acquired players for around one million euros.

– We have never seen this kind of spending in the First League, a researcher familiar with football financing Kieran Maguire comment for the BBC.

– Wrexham used their owners’ money to accelerate their sky-high 5th and 4th in the top flight, where money can buy their way out. Birmingham are trying to do the same in League One.

Investment company Knighthead Capital bought Birmingham 2023. Former NFL superstar Tom Brady is included in the ownership ladder, according to media reports with a share of 3.3 percent.

– Birmingham has wasted like a lottery winner. Wrexham’s owners are wealthy, but not any property fund, Maguire said.

Wrexham took to Brady on Instagram when the former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning posed in a Wrexham shirt.

Manning’s Giants beat Brady’s New England Patriots in the Super Bowl twice.

– Now I can beat Brady in both sports! Dear Wrexham, Manning commented on the post.

Brady, who has a record seven Super Bowl wins in his career, posted a video in response showing off one of his championship trophies.

– I have been working on an answer video for Eli. I looked around but couldn’t find my other six trophies. Rob, can you tell the Wrexham supporters a bit of NFL history? Thanks, see you on Monday.
