According to Tech Crunch’s report, more than 8,500 authors of fiction, non-fiction and poetry have signed the letter.

CRITICISM TO TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES

The letter criticizes the tech companies behind major language models like ChatGPT, Bard, LLaMa for using their writing without permission or compensation.

The addressees of the letter include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Authors think that these technologies mimic their language, stories, styles and ideas, and that millions of copyrighted books, articles, essays and poems are food for AI systems.

The letter asks companies to:

  1. Get permission to use our copyrighted materials in your productive AI programs.

  2. Compensate authors fairly for past and continuing use of our works in your productive AI programs.

  3. Fairly compensate authors for the use of our works in AI output, whether or not the output is infringing under applicable law.
