With Gigantic they introduced a colorful MOBA. But just a year later the game was discontinued. Too few players and expectations couldn’t be met. Now, 6 years later, the game is being re-released.
The crazy hero shooter Gigantic appeared at a time when hero shooters and mobas were big and modern. With Overwatch, Paragon and Paladins, several hero shooters came onto the market and vied for the favor of players. Gigantic also had to listen to accusations that they had copied the successful Overwatch. Just as Ubisoft has been trying more or less sensibly for years to copy successful games and package them into the in-house “Ubisoft formula”.
With Gigantic, the development team at Motiga and Perfect World wanted to offer a particularly colorful and chaotic shooter. Similar to its colleagues Battleborn and Paragon, Gigantic had a small, enthusiastic community, but nothing that could compete with the huge success of Overwatch a year earlier: in the summer of 2018, the developers shut down Gigantic’s servers. But now the game is making a surprising return.
Gigantic returns to Steam after 6 years and wants to attract players
Does the game even have a chance? However, our colleagues at PCGamer wonder whether Gigantic even has a chance. Because Gigantic was already late to the “hero shooter” party and is now trying again:
If Gigantic was late to the party to stay afloat the first time around, why should it be any different half a decade later?
A big advantage of Gigantic is that it is quite unique compared to Paladins, Overwatch or well-known MOBAs like Dota 2: There are no lanes, towers, sneakers or capture points, but instead it’s always about fast and action-packed battles. Specifically, it’s about defeating players and thereby charging a particularly powerful ability. This means that Gigantic plays more like a crazy arena shooter than a tactical League of Legends.
On the other hand, there is criticism of Gigantic’s return that the struggling publisher and corporation “Embracer Group” is probably just trying to get some money out of well-known brands. The Embracer Group had badly miscalculated on the stock market and urgently needed money to plug various holes.
How is the game received? Just under a week after release (April 9, 2024), Gigantic has 78% positive reviews on Steam with just over 2,000 reviews. Many praise the design and the excellent combat. There is criticism mainly for the many bugs and the weak servers.
That’s why many players say: The game’s graphics and gameplay are really great, now the developers just have to get the bugs under control and then there’s a real insider tip here.
