In a post on Reddit, a user presents his unusual PC case. To save money, he salvaged an old printer and installed his hardware components in it. The community is enthusiastic about this brilliant idea.
PC hobbyists like to get creative when assembling their systems. Sometimes they have to get inventive out of necessity to solve PC assembly problems. Others simply don’t want to spend money unnecessarily and therefore use what is available to them for their projects. For example, an inventor built a gaming PC out of an old microwave.

“An ITX case is a bit too expensive for me” – From a printer to a gaming PC
What did the hobbyist do with his PC? The user “Ill-Drawer-1953” shared some pictures of his extraordinary PC case with the community on Reddit. In the project he completely gutted an old multifunction printer. He then made some changes to the empty printer housing. This allowed him to install his PC hardware into the printer.
Originally he wanted to buy a very compact PC case in ITX format. Such cases are significantly smaller than normal desktop computers. But he said “An ITX case is a bit too expensive for me” and therefore decided to completely rebuild the printer.
How did he go about it? The first thing “Ill-Drawer-1953” checked was whether its hardware would even fit into the printer. With a size of 17 cm x 17 cm, the existing ITX motherboard was small enough.
After he was sure that his project would not fail due to components that were too large, he began to disassemble the printer’s interior and cleaned the completely yellowed exterior parts. Sometimes PC projects fail due to poor decisions by manufacturers who place stickers in the wrong place.
To ensure sufficient cooling, he cut a hole in one of the two sides of the case and attached a fan grille from the outside. He wanted to ensure that the power supply received enough fresh air. In order to be able to install the graphics card and the power supply safely, he also placed a 5 cm thick PVC plate on the bottom of the printer housing.
He also secured the plate with hot glue. In order to be able to switch on the PC, “Ill-Drawer-1953” installed a power button in the printer’s former control panel.
Built-in components and plans for the future
What kind of PC hardware was installed? The hobbyist does not name each component in detail. He provided the following information:
Mainboard: Jginyue B760i-Snow Dream for Intel CPUs (12th/13th generation, Socket 1700) and DDR4 RAM
In order to get the most elegant look possible, almost all parts are white. The glass pane of the original scanner unit in the printer gives you a clear view of all the components inside. Only the CPU cooler with its black fan and a few cables disturb the overall picture somewhat. Fortunately, he doesn’t have to worry about the cables of 17 fans like this gamer does.
Is the project now finally completed? No, some adjustments still need to be made. In the comments under his post, the hobbyist reveals that he would like to change the AMD graphics card for an Nvidia RXT 4060 TI. He also wants to replace the black CPU cooler with a better model in white.
Community members also give him tips to improve the overall cooling of the system. The user Pfannkuchen93 goes one step further and demands a built-in display:
The scanner cover needs to become an LCD, that would be so awesome!
But even without such extras, he receives a lot of praise for his project. Copytechguy says:
