The death toll from the explosion and fire at Guinea’s main fuel depot, which took place overnight from Sunday to Monday in downtown Conakry, rose from 18 to 23 dead and 241 injured, announced this Thursday evening, December 21, the government in a press release read on national television. According to the Minister of Justice Alphonse Charles Wright, contacted by RFI, the public prosecutor has opened legal investigations against of the Kaloum hydrocarbon depositbut also for destruction, homicide and intentional assault and battery.
Guinean justice has announced the establishment of a pool of investigators, made up of the gendarmerie, police and civil protection. For the purposes of these investigations and for security reasons, the area impacted by the disaster, that is to say the Coronthie district, remains closed to the public.
The authorities still recommend wearing a mask in the commune of Kaloum, due to the toxic fumes escaping from the scene of the fire.
The disaster caused the death of 23 people and 241 were injured, the government announced in a press release read Thursday evening on public television.
