An Institute dedicated to Women’s Cancers will see the light of day in France by 2025. This centre, designed in particular by the Institut Curie, will make it possible to better screen patients at risk and provide comprehensive support to women affected by cancer.
The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, announced it on May 16, 2023: a Women’s Cancer Institute will be designed in France by the Institut Curie, the University of Paris-Sciences et Lettres (PSL) and Inserm. It will be labeled Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire (IHU) as part of the Plan France Health 2030. With over 78,000 new cases and 20,000 deaths each year in France, female cancers are a real public health issue. This is why it seemed essential to create a specialized and unique structure of international scope who places women at the heart of research and innovation and whose objective is to better understand, prevent, detect cancers (rare cancers, gynecological cancers, breast cancers, etc.)especially in patients at risk, and cure more and more patients. This major center dedicated to female cancers, whose main site will be located in the 5th district of Paris (an ideal location as it is close to research laboratories, the Institut Curie hospital and PSL University), will be piloted by scientists and healthcare professionals.

Concretely, the Women’s Cancer Institute will, over a 10-year program:
► Associate all medical, paramedical and scientific expertise alongside companies and patient associations.
► Develop innovative solutions to meet the need for new therapeutic options adjusted to the anatomical location, to the biology, to the age of the women with the aim of reducing the mortality rates, in particular of rare forms of cancer.
► Adapt cancer treatment to women’s quality of life and allow patients to benefit fromfull supportboth medical and psychological and paramedical
► Better train caregivers and scientists in the specific challenges of these cancers and support new professions resulting from the digital transformation of research and care.
► Develop a network of hospital partners and collaborations present everywhere in France
► Make France a leader in innovation against women’s cancers and curing ever more women.
“On the social level, we start from the double observation that there are strong disparities in careand that cancer is an aggravating factor in precarious situations for women, which also generates more work stoppages and more working time arrangements than for men“, laments Pre Anne Vincent-Salomon, pathologist specializing in female cancers at the Institut Curie and professor at PSL University, director of this new center. “The approach we propose is new because it is more globalfrom research on the biology of the tumor to consideration of the person in his or her environment“, adds Professor Alain Puisieux, director of the Institut Curie Research Center.
