Banishment – The cool, unobtrusive spell that can save you

What can banishment do? Banishment works like a temporary timeout for your enemies. You can use it to take a particularly strong opponent out of the fight for up to two rounds while you then take care of the other opponents.

The target is therefore banished to another plane of existence and cannot move, perform any actions, bonus actions or reactions. The spell can also be cast at a higher spell slot level – you can cast banishment on one additional target per level.

Spell: Banishment

The following classes have access to banishment:

  • Cleric (Level 7)
  • Warlock (Level 7)
  • Mage (Level 7)
  • Wizard (level 7)
  • Bard (College of Lore at level 10)
  • The best thing about Banishment is its versatility. Whether you’re surrounded by enemies or just need time to rethink your strategy, this spell is your ticket to salvation.

For example, you can use it to take out a dangerous wizard who bombards your allies with powerful spells like Fireball, which causes a lot of AOE damage. Or, for example, you can send a strong opponent to another dimension in order to concentrate on the weaker ones first.

The YouTuber Toyhouze published a short video explaining the potential of the magic and showing examples:

  • In Act 3, for example, on a Steel Guard that self-destructs and deals AOE damage – but with Banishment you can protect your group from the damage
  • Also in Act 3 against the dragon Ansur while charging his AOE ability. So instead of hiding from the ability, you can also cast Banishment on him to avoid the damage
  • Notice: The spell requires the opponents to make a charisma saving throw, which is why you should check beforehand how much charisma the opponent has. The spell also requires concentration.

However, you can get a bonus with various items that you can obtain over the course of the game – i.e. the effect: Arcane Acuity. This gives you +1 to your spell attack rolls and to your spell difficulty, making it harder for enemies to resist your spells.

For example, the following items give Arcane Acuity:

  • Elixir of Battlemage’s Power
  • Gloves of Battlemage’s Power
  • Hat of Fire Acuity
  • Banishment is a spell that not every player may have on their radar, but has the potential to decide the outcome of a fight. Its versatility makes the spell a good choice for your run. So banishment could be what you need to make the fight against nasty opponents easier.

You can take a strong spell with you at level 1 and it’s worth it: an underestimated spell is also one of the strongest, with which you can win many battles
