An expert explains why you should never charge your phone overnight

An expert says if you want to extend the life of your battery, you should never charge your phone overnight.

Many users know this. At the end of the day, the cell phone is connected to the charging cable so that you can start the day at 100% the next morning. Or you can grab a power bank to charge your cell phone.

Ritesh Chugh, Associate Professor of Information and Communications Technology at CQ University Australia, explained in an interview with The Conversation.

The battery is put under a lot more strain at night than when you charge your phone for a short time

Why shouldn’t you charge your cell phone at night? “Most new generation smartphones take between 30 minutes and two hours to fully charge,” says Ritesh Chugh.

Therefore, it is not only unnecessary to charge the cell phone overnight, but it also accelerates the aging of the battery.

In the case of overnight charging, this would mean charging the battery four times as long as it needs because it stays plugged in for six to eight hours. This would also chemically deteriorate the lithium-ion battery that is installed in every modern cell phone.

There is also another problem. Because apps run on your cell phone even at night, which put a strain on the battery. As a result, the battery is repeatedly discharged to 99% and is then recharged: “This trickle charge can wear out a battery over time. That’s why many manufacturers have features to regulate this function,” Chugh explained.

That’s why some manufacturers, such as Samsung and Apple, integrate measures to prevent excessive charging. Here the charging slows down significantly from 80 or 85%.

By the way, it is just as damaging if you let your battery run completely empty. This also puts a strain on your battery.

What other tip does he have? Another problem for your cell phone battery is the contamination of the charging port on the cell phone. “Crumbs and dust are the enemies of your mobile devices and your battery life,” he added.

Dust collects in the phone’s charging ports and causes the device to overheat or stop charging. That’s why you should either protect the connection or at least clean it regularly.
