The ECOWAS mediator for Guinea, former Beninese President Thomas Boni Yayi, has been in Conakry since Tuesday evening July 19. The current president of ECOWAS and the new president of the ECOWAS Commission arrive on Wednesday. This mediation mission wants to meet the authorities of the transition in Guinea, in particular to obtain a ” acceptable schedule of the duration of the transition and avoid Guinea being sanctioned on August 1st.

The mission is organized on the initiative of the current president of the ECOWASUmaro Sissoco Embalo and the former president of Benin, Thomas Boni Yayi, responsible for conducting the mediation. These two personalities first consulted each head of state in the sub-region for a common position on Guinea.

Their objective in coming to Conakry: to convince Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya to reconsider the duration of the transition. ECOWAS comes with a proposal on the table: two years, like the proposals made in the other transitions underway in Mali and Burkina Faso.

According to some sources, the Guinean authorities would be ready to accept this proposal. It remains to be seen from when to start the transition counters: July or January, as several political parties suggest.
