We’ve been hearing for decades that Hollywood is on the brink of creativity and that things are getting worse. Nowadays, the blame is on the franchises, but one American director has a different opinion. He thinks streamers and gaming are to blame.
Who is the director? Harmony Korine is more of an indie director, whose best-known film is probably Spring Breakers from 2012. As IndieWire reports, the director also spoke about the current state of Hollywood during the Venice Film Festival.
He talks about how Hollywood is falling apart creatively. That’s not a special statement, directors are always saying that. The interesting thing is that he doesn’t blame the big franchises, but other forms of entertainment.

What does Korine say about today’s Hollywood? The director was at a press conference promoting his latest film Baby Invasion. He spoke about the current state of Hollywood and how creative talent is being lost. Hollywood needs to focus more on today’s youth.
What’s happening in Hollywood, and I think Hollywood is starting to crumble creatively, is that they’re losing a lot of the most talented and creative minds to gaming and streamers. Just like IShowSpeed is a movie, Kai Cenat is a movie.

He goes on to say that creative people are looking for places other than film because film is no longer the dominant art form. He even goes so far as to say: IShowSpeed is the new Tarkovsky. Andrei Tarkovsky is an important filmmaker who has inspired many well-known directors. One of his most important works is Stalker. The film also inspired the game series of the same name.
His new film Baby Invasion is also inspired by the live streaming idea. It is about a group of mercenaries who rob rich people and stream it. The director says that in the future, this will also be entertainment in real life.
Is there really a lack of talent? That’s difficult to say, as it’s difficult to compare it with other eras in Hollywood. There are still many well-known directors involved in major productions. But new talent is constantly emerging in smaller films. Promising actors are also appearing on the screen. But they have to compete against the big names.
But that has always been the case. In the past, there was Scorsese or Coppola and today there are Villeneuve and Nolan. Every era has its great directors and actors and talented young people can reach that level. They just need to be properly supported. Boon Joon-ho is also a great director of our time. He showed what he can do back in 2003: Before Parasite, the director made a masterpiece about a true crime from South Korea.
