A missile targeting an American destroyer shot down by the United States
The American army announced this Sunday, January 14, that it had shot down a cruise missile targeting an American destroyer, fired from an area of Yemen controlled by the Houthis. The missile targeted the USS Laboon, operating in the southern Red Sea, according to a statement from the US Middle East Command (Centcom). “The missile was shot down in the vicinity of the coast of Hodeidah [dans l’ouest du Yémen] by an American fighter plane,” Centcom added, indicating that there were no injuries or damage.
Upstream, Washington denied reports from Houthi media reporting new “American-British strikes” carried out this Sunday against the port city of Hodeida.
On the other hand, on Friday January 12, American and British forces had struck targets across Yemen, reinforcing fears of regional spread of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.
Hamas says ‘many’ hostages killed recently
The armed wing of Hamas released a video this Sunday, January 14, showing three living Israeli hostages, two men and a woman, held in the Gaza Strip since October 7. This video gives no indication of when it was filmed. The three hostages ask the Israeli authorities in Hebrew to act for their release.
Furthermore, Hamas’ military wing said that “many” of the hostages “were probably killed recently” and attributed “full responsibility” for their fate to Israel.
Some 250 people were taken hostage on October 7, and 132 are still in Gaza, of whom at least 25 are believed to have been killed, according to Israeli authorities. About a hundred were released under a truce at the end of November.
Rallies in Israel for the 100th day of the conflict
For one hundred days of detention, and as much anguish, the Israelis expressed this Sunday, January 14, their solidarity with the hostages held in the Gaza Strip by Hamas and its allies, and demanded their return.
Throughout the day, a series of events were organized in Tel Aviv where the day before, several thousand people had already gathered. Elsewhere in the country, prayers were said and speeches delivered during ceremonies organized in universities, while in Jerusalem deputies released yellow balloons in front of the Israeli parliament.
Such rallies also took place in London, Paris and Berlin to demand the “immediate” release of the hostages.
Three gunmen and five Palestinians died
The Israeli army killed three armed men who entered its territory this Sunday, January 14, in the border region with Lebanon where two Israeli civilians, a mother and her son, also died in a missile attack from the neighboring country. During a patrol “in the Har Dov sector”, Israeli soldiers “spotted a terrorist cell entering Israeli territory from Lebanon which opened fire” on them, the army said in a statement.
In addition, five Palestinians died this Sunday after incidents and clashes with the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank, according to a tally from the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Palestinian video journalist killed in strike
Yazan al-Zwaidi, a 28-year-old Palestinian, video journalist for the Arab television channel Al-Ghad, based in Cairo, was killed on Sunday in Gaza, this media announced, attributing his death to “shooting” from the Israeli army. In addition to Yazan al-Zwaidi, at least 82 journalists and media workers, the vast majority Palestinian, have been killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The UN said it was “very concerned” on Monday by this “high toll”.
On January 9, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) declared that crimes against journalists were included in its investigation into war crimes in Gaza.
