A series of apocalyptic videos are going viral on TikTok that show images of the artificial intelligence “midjourney”: The AI is supposed to predict what the last selfie ever taken on earth will look like. They are visions of doom. They seem to fascinate people in a morbid way.
What kind of AI is this? “Midjourney” is an artificial intelligence that creates images. The developers say they want to expand the imagination of the human race. That’s a lofty goal.
According to its own statements, the project is from a former researcher at NASA, who is supported by top-class consultants (via midjourney).

How did AI become popular? The TikTok channel “Robotoverloards” is currently posting short videos with images created by the AI when it answered hypothetical questions and spat out images (via tiktok).
The most popular videos revolve around the AI showing end-of-the-world scenarios.
The video “Asking an Ai to show the last selfie ever taken” has generated over 13 million views on TikTok. The video is so successful that it has now been expanded into a 4-part series.
What do the pictures show? The AI’s images recreate the classic “selfie motif”: someone is photographing themselves in front of an expressive background. But where people usually pose or pull a strange ducky pout, here you can see bald, emaciated people: Some look like skeletons or are soulless-looking shells.
Some of these “last men on earth” wear a gas mask, one even wears some kind of space suit, and still another contorts his face into a smile.
In the background one no longer sees natural monuments or special locations, but devastation, fire, impacts by nuclear weapons or comets.
Some doomsday scenarios feature a crowd of people in the background who look just as haggard and desperate as the person taking the selfie. Other images of the sinking show corpses or high-rise buildings on fire.
AI can be asked via Discord to show anything
Can you ask the AI yourself? Yes, the AI is freely accessible via a Discord bot.
With the “Imagine” command, you can ask the AI to create images as answers to your hypothetical questions.
For example, one user asked the AI to create images that show what it would look like if Angela Merkel were a Jedi. Others ask for far less gruesome performances.
