An agreement in sight for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia?

A meeting presented as crucial, which relates to the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo, is to be held this Saturday, March 18 in Ohrid, North Macedonia. It will bring together Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, as well as European and American mediators.

In theory, the meeting should focus on how to implement the European plan for “ normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, theoretically accepted by both parties on February 27th. Yet Aleksandar Vucic once again addressed the nation on Thursday evening March 16 to say he had no intention of signing anything.

This plan provides that Serbia would no longer oppose Kosovo’s accession to international institutions, without however proceeding with bilateral recognition.

The extreme right, which demonstrates daily in Belgrade, nevertheless sees in it a “ treason from Serbian Kosovo.

Thousands of people demonstrated Friday evening March 17 in Belgrade, at the call of nationalist parties and movements, against a European plan aimed at normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo, on the eve of new discussions by their leaders under the Brussels staff.

In Pristina, it is the counterpart that goes badly, namely the creation of a “ Association of Kosovo Serb Municipalities “, in which many want to see a step towards a territorial partition of the small country.

In recent days, diplomatic pressure has intensified further, with American and European envoys multiplying shuttles between Belgrade and Pristina, calling on the two parties to make compromises, in the name of “ balkan stability “.
