Black Myth: Wukong wins several awards at the Steam Awards 2024 and even trumps Baldur’s Gate 3 in this aspect.
What kind of game is this? Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game from Chinese studio Game Science. As the chosen one with striking similarities to Sun Wukong, the mythical monkey king, you fight your way through Chinese mythology. The story is based on the Chinese novel “Journey to the West”, a classic of Chinese literature.
Black Myth: Wukong has long been the most requested game on Steam. The game not only managed to build up a lot of hype – but also managed to meet the high expectations upon release. Player reviews on Steam are “extremely positive.”
With over 2.2 million concurrent players, no new game had a higher peak player count on Steam in 2024 – most of the players came from China.
Even surpasses Baldur’s Gate 3 in the Steam Awards
This is how many awards Black Myth: Wukong has received: The game won 3 awards at the 2024 Steam Awards: “Game of the Year”, “Best Game You’re Bad at” and “Outstanding Game with a Deep Story”. This surpasses the exceptional role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3, which only managed to secure two awards at the Steam Awards last year.
Unlike the Game Awards, the winners of the Steam Awards are not chosen through a mix of jury and fan voting. Any Steam user can vote for any game – whether they own it or not.
This year’s winners are already being discussed on Reddit. Nobody seems to be really surprised by the results, but the award for “profound story” causes surprise – it is not something that will make the game memorable.
Many speculate that the game’s success at the Steam Awards is due to the large number of Steam users from Asia, particularly China. At this year’s Game Awards, Black Myth: Wukong didn’t win Game of the Year, which the game director was visibly disappointed about.
