Three years after Tenet, director and screenwriter Christopher Nolan is back on the big screen with a new work. This time, however, we’re not dealing with a sci-fi action blockbuster. Instead, as with the war film Dunkirk, Nolan dives into the time of the Second World War.

Oppenheimer tells the story of the American scientist and physicist J.Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy stars as the controversial historical figure. The film has now been shown to the first critics and the reactions have been extremely positive.

Oppenheimer: That’s what the first voices of the critics say about the new Christopher Nolan film

Robbie Collin from the Telegraph clearly took Oppenheimer with him.

I’m torn between flirtatious and mysterious when it comes to Oppenheimer and just blurting out and saying there’s a absolute banger that split my brain open like a wriggling plutonium atom and left me sobbing until the end of the credits like I couldn’t remember anything else.

The film also seems to refute a recurring criticism of Nolan.

And for all those who have complained about the lack of sex in Christopher Nolan’s earlier works… boy oh BOY here you get sexas only Nolan can stage it.

For Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri, Oppenheimer was one thing above all else: scary.

The word that keeps coming to my mind is ‘terrifying’. A fast-paced, insanely detailed, complex historical drama that builds and builds until Nolan on the most spectacular, harrowing way to drop the hammer.

Lindsey Bahr, writing for the Associated Press, commends the excellent cast.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is truly a spectacular achievement, in its truthful, concise adaptation, imaginative storytelling and nuanced performances by Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and the many, many others involved – some [sind] only for one scene [im Film].

The Sunday Time’s Jonathan Dean does have one criticism though.

What is bad? The female characters are weak – Emily Blunt only comes out of her stressed mother role once. Lands anyway [Oppenheimer] in my top 3 best Nolan films, right next to Memento and Prestige.

Matt Maytum, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Total Film writes:

Oppenheimer left me speechless: a character study of incredible proportions, with a superb performance by Cillian Murphy. An epic historical drama, but with a distinct Nolan sensibility: suspense, structure, sense of proportion, startling sound design, striking visuals. Wow.

Collider’s Steven Weintraub also highlights the camerawork.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is incredible. Every aspect of the film is worth talking about, from the brilliant performances throughout Hoyte van Hoytema’s great cinematography to the way Nolan tells the story. The three hours runtime fly by. Watch the film in IMAX and 70mm if you can.

When is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in cinemas?

The theatrical release of Oppenheimer is very close. From the July 20, 2023 the new Nolan conquers the local cinemas and promises three nerve-wracking hours. If you need a movie to wind down afterward, you can watch Straightaway with Barbie Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which hits theaters the same day.
